Over and Under Goals: A Score-Reading Worksheet

14 September 2026 · Educational reading

To interpret a football total, first identify whose goals count and which period is included. Only then compare the number with the line. A total for the match is not the same as a total for one team.

One match, several different totals

In a fictional game, the score is 1–0 at half time and 2–2 at the end of the match.

What is being counted? Goals
Both teams, first half 1
Both teams, second half 3
Both teams, whole match 4
Home team, whole match 2
Away team, whole match 2

The second-half total is four minus one, not four. The final score contains the goals from both halves.

Apply a boundary

Condition First-half total of 1 Second-half total of 3 Match total of 4
Over 1.5 False True True
Over 2.5 False True True
Under 3.5 True True False

For a half-goal line, an integer total cannot land exactly on the boundary. This does not mean that every kind of total is settled the same way. Whole-goal and quarter-goal lines use different conventions and are outside this worksheet.

Common reading mistakes

Using one team’s score as the match total. At 2–2, the total is four, not two.

Confusing goals with the winning team. A 4–0 score and a 2–2 score both contain four goals, although their match results differ.

Using the final score for a first-half question. Later goals cannot change a completed first-half total.

Exercise

The half-time score is 1–1 and the final score is 2–1. Find the totals for each half.

Answer: two goals in the first half and one in the second. Over 1.5 is true for the first-half total and false for the second-half total.

This worksheet explains labels using invented scores. It does not estimate the probability of future goals or recommend a stake. For a real disputed record, the exact period and applicable settlement rules matter.
